The estimate came with a wide margin of uncertainty, so scientists cannot say exactly what year it was born. But even the estimate was enough to confirm something extraordinary. Greenland sharks can live for centuries. They grow incredibly slowly, move through the cold waters of the North Atlantic and Arctic, and are now considered the longest-lived vertebrates known to science.
