A man (allegedly) pretended to play for the 49ers, built up an entire fake online persona around this and ended up scamming over 60 women out of $1.3 million and the FBI thinks there could be more women.
This is your reminder that in the age of AI, scams can get more convincing and scammers don’t start with an obvious money request, they can build a ‘relationships’ so that it feels real.
Here’s a few red flags to look for:
• If someone you met online starts talking about investment opportunities, slow down.
This could be someone you met on a dating app, a random message or even through a share-interest group like the knitting page or online book club.
• Screenshots of investment returns doesn’t prove anything.
• And if you’re ever in that situation, ask a friend. When you’ve been targeted it’s very hard to spot these red flags so ask someone who isn’t attached.
