If 50 to 70 percent is mature use prep and get it on the crop atleast 5 to 7 days before first freeze is forecast. I t makes a big difference here in north Texas

Your heat units will determine when you mature. Cotton is pretty specific to that table. Highest heat temp of the day -60° /2 equals heat units for the day. You got 10 units the day it hit 80°. Find your yearly totals and it will tell you what your maturity is.

Slice the boll with a sharp knife. If the center of the seed are still jelly it needs a while

Bolls normally start to open about 50 days after flowering. Cut some of the harvestable bolls in half with a very sharp knife, cutting through the seeds. If the seeds are jelly like they are not mature enough to defoliate if the seeds if firm with layers inside it’s ready to defoliate.Use Folex to knock the leaves off with 32 oz of Ethepon to open the bolls before you get a frost

Plant ultra narrow row for faster maturity

Good fun idea to do this.

Basic rule of thumb is a boll is mature 45 days after white bloom with proper degree units. Hopefully you will see a few bolls in the bottom mature and open. Very doubtful that any upper bolls will ever make it to maturity

Use a little gramaxone in the defoliant, it’s used in emergencies in the south but will open up bolls quick.

What Variety? You need a short season upland variety not enough heat for Pima.

If you don’t have any bolls open before a frost, the bolls will not open unfortunately. If you do want it open, you’ll need to spray it 2 maybe 3 weeks before you get a frost

It looks really good. You should get a few open bolls. Running Out of heat will hurt you but hopefully you get several. On a side note cattle love to eat it once they learn too. The fiber, not the plant.

Once they arent squeezable they’ll open soon. Cotton doesn’t like under 60° but you’re still accumulating DD60. Put out 16 oz/acre pix lol

Depends when u get first frost. Any boll that has moisture in the boll and not beginning to crack when it frosts or freeze will lock up and won’t open. But in recent years faster maturing cotton has been bred up but at the cost of yield. Faster maturing cotton doesn’t make as much as full season cotton.
