They are not married yet. I can see mil point of view. She should just plan on doing something else fun for herself that day. It didn’t say whose birthday celebration. If it’s his birthday I would start a celebration the night before at a hotel, dinner, something he likes then let him join his family while you do what you want. Top it off with another celebration when he gets home. Let them enjoy their little family time get together
