Early human tribes never had the capacity to have gender roles. You did what you had to do to survive. You werent given the luxery of choosing to be a "stay a home mom gathering berries on the side". Besides if you lived in a part of the world where plants were lush all year round, your tribe may have lived off of almost entirely plants (why risk your life hunting when you could just grab a mango).
