@dralexis_md: What does a fibromyalgia diagnosis actually mean? A rheumatologist explains why fibromyalgia is real; and why it can coexist with autoimmune disease. #Fibromyalgia #FibromyalgiaSymptoms #ChronicPain #Rheumatology #AutoimmuneDisease
I was denied by a rheumatologist because I have fibromyalgia. 😔

I had a friend who is now deceased tell me " They tell you it's fibromyalgia when they don't know what the hell is wrong with you".

I think there are several reasons why patients are hesitant to accept a fibromyalgia diagnosis, and we need to look beyond the assumption that they simply don’t believe their doctors. We’re hearing from patients who say that once fibromyalgia is in their medical records, new or worsening symptoms are sometimes attributed to it without further investigation. Some report having difficulty even getting another appointment with a rheumatologist. We also have a shortage of rheumatologists, which creates another barrier to care. Fibromyalgia is a real condition, but having that diagnosis doesn’t mean someone can’t develop another medical condition. And while you, as a rheumatologist, may not dismiss patients this way, that doesn’t mean it isn’t happening elsewhere. I think we need to listen to what patients are reporting and recognize that these barriers deserve attention. We can’t address a problem if we’re unwilling to acknowledge it.

Once you have the fibro dx, it’s game over for future care. It’s so exhausting

I've gone and also I think my Doctor gone beyond any diagnosis. Personally it was driving me mad, seeking a diagnosis. So decided to go of symptoms. Closest diagnosis I've accepted is Fibromyalgia, also I do have other symptoms that goes outside the diagnosis. Doctors in the UK will only allow you to speak about one set of symptoms. They have to book another appointment, but the reality is they maybe related? I just want to know what will work for my symptoms. for eg. My iron is low, not anemic, 1, 2 points away from anemic. But have symptoms. For years I would barely function, going back and forth. I take my Iron tabs when I need it. I need not confirmation or AE trips. I had numbness for years, I use treatments for this, they reside and stable while being treated. Im not waiting around to be totally beyond. Then to be treated. luckily I found a Doctor to practice ldn, but I reckon money talks and it change my health for the best.

The problem is many of us were diagnosed with it without truly ruling everything else out. And we faced real stigma and bias. Even though you properly access and treat it doesn’t mean everyone else the patient encounters will. My diagnosis was reversed when other physical and genetic conditions were properly identified.

Absolutely!! The Drs used to say it’s fibromyalgia and then immediately say, “Here is our recommendations for good therapist in our area.” 🤷♀️

It’s good that YOU use it that way, most doctors don’t… A fibro diagnosis stops doctors in their tracks, they refuse to look further…

I just saw study this week where they say that fibromyalgia has to do with childhood adversity and that some nerves and things are supposed to die off, but don’t because of trauma or something. I figured great, another reason for people to try and force me on mental health meds

I got a fibromyalgia diagnosis and now none of my doctors want to take me seriously when I'm having pain out of the ordinary - I can't tell you how many times I've been referred to psychiatry because "it's probably your depression making it worse". Well, am I in pain because I'm depressed or am I depressed because I'm in pain? Fibromyalgia is the new hypochondria in the eyes of most medical professionals, whether it's true or not.

Fibro IS very real, but it's an illness of exclusion and many doctors will diagnose it WITHOUT excluding other things. Turns out I have EDS, MCAS, and POTS, but my PCP misdiagnosed me for YEARS as just having fibromyalgia, all the while I was damaging my joints and getting improper treatment.

The reason we hate the diagnosis is because it's used as a reason to ignore us forever. Any symptoms, yeah that's fibro. Fibro doesn't respond to treatments so they won't even try. We're treated like addicts when we simply want to escape the constant crippling pain. Once fibro is on your file no doctor will treat you for anything.

I was told over and over again I had fibromyalgia and then I had a full blown myasthenia gravis crisis and nearly lost my life. It was never fibromyalgia.

It’s because it’s been used as an excuse to dismiss every single complaint I have. But also not treated seriously enough to warrant any real pain relief or management. It’s a blanket diagnosis for a lifetime of medical gaslighting.

The problem is when it goes in the chart and other DOCTORS see it. I have a type of genetically confirmed EDS and the problem with something stigmatizing written in my chart once is how I get treated by the next doctor. We need better doc education, not just better patient education.

That fibro diagnosis is code for don’t take them seriously. Don’t bother searching for answers because you won’t find anything. Finally I found a rheumatologist who diagnosed an autoimmune disorder and said it wasn’t fibromyalgia. Getting fibromyalgia off my chart was a challenge but it changed the way I was treated by med staff.

What makes me livid as a Fibro patient is that SANE OPIOIDS HELP A LOT!!!!!!! but we have NO ACCESS to actual pain meds and unlimited access to psych meds that can cause us to get more depressed

Just because you think that way doesn’t mean other providers do. The second I got my fibro diagnosis, no specialists that my doctor sent me to wanted to look at other options. Please listen to the experiences of everyone here in your comments.

my fibro is treated as drug seeking in the er when i come in with literal injuries and it was masking an underlying issue that nobody explored. and i keep finding more underlying issues that were previously brushed off as just fibro. the stigma in health care against chronic pain makes us not wanted to be diagnosed with chronic pain

I literally have severe nerve compression in my neck (found this out after I pressed for proper diagnostics from a different doctor) but was told by a pain management doctor *before any diagnostics* that “maybe you have fibromyalgia”
