@converg3_: Morrissey performing “Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want”, one of The Smiths’ most deceptively simple and enduring songs. Written by Johnny Marr with lyrics by Morrissey, it was released in 1984 as the B-side to “William, It Was Really Nothing” and later appeared on Hatful of Hollow. Despite its short length, the song captures one of the central themes that runs through much of The Smiths’ work: longing for something that feels just out of reach. Marr’s arrangement is remarkably restrained, built around a gentle acoustic guitar melody that gives the song an almost lullaby-like quality. That softness contrasts beautifully with Morrissey’s lyrics, which express exhaustion, frustration and an almost desperate desire for a small piece of happiness after repeated disappointment. The phrase “please let me get what I want” sounds simple, but its repetition gives it the feeling of a genuine plea rather than a demand. Interestingly, Morrissey sometimes performs the line as “let me have who I want”, which subtly changes the emphasis from obtaining something to possessing or being with someone specific. It adds another layer of intimacy to a song that already feels deeply personal, while still preserving the original sense of yearning that made it so memorable. #Morrissey #TheSmiths #PleasePleasePleaseLetMeGetWhatIWant #HatfulOfHollow #AlternativeMusic
