Absa Corporate and Investment Banking launched Absa Digital Asset Custody on September 21, 2026, built on Ripple's custody technology, eleven months after Ripple announced the partnership on October 15, 2025. Absa called it a digital first for Africa, built to institutional standards. Absa holds majority stakes in banks across ten countries: Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. The regulatory groundwork came first: South Africa's Financial Sector Conduct Authority had received 533 crypto asset service provider applications and approved 310 of them as of March 31, 2026. About 7.8 million South Africans, roughly 13 percent of the population, already hold crypto, mostly through local exchanges rather than a bank.
