@jpthemusicenjoyer2: This is part 18 of breaking down the lyrics of every tool song, and today we discuss “Eulogy” Some of the symbolism in the lyrics, go way deeper than I had ever originally thought. But a key theme of this song is the idea of false martyrs and leaders that are great speakers and can rally a group behind them, even though their words don’t carry much substance Throughout the track, there are subtle references to Scientology and the skull and bones, which is a secret society at Yale University The song concludes with the narrator questioning why they would ever follow such a false martyr. Once the leaders mask begins to slip, the narrator gets angry, and demands that the leader follow through with their convictions, and die for their sins What do you think this song is about? Got to see Eulogy live in 96, front row at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, Maynard wearing the blue body paint.

I definitely agree with the connections to L. Ron Hubbard because he was mentioned by name in the song Ænema

Pretty well known how much Maynard hates Scientology and L Ron

Further pushing the theory that it’s about Scientology is the story about TOOL performing at the Church of Scientology’s Garden Pavilion in ‘93

I think it has a lot to do with the trauma from his mother & her being a devout Christian. There are many songs from his different bands where he speaks about religious systematic programming.

Amazing interpretation as always I love the ending where he mentions getting off his cross to nail the next “fool martyr”

LRH lived on a boat with his core group for a while so I think that's the skull and bones reference as well

My thoughts are similar, but narrowed down to it just being about self-righteous indignation. Like, someone who's fighting to die on a hill, without realizing it's actually a valley.

the album was dedicated to late comedian and friend of Maynard's, Bill Hicks. He actually says in one of his routines that he himself has "alot of nothing to say", and would often scream at his audience as part of his on-stage persona, so I always just assumed it was about him.

I think I remember seeing that Danny confirmed it’s about LRH. Said they started writing it in like 93 and it was aimed at him. I think in a drummers magazine article? Maybe I’m crazy

i feel like “eulogy” could be interpreted as being abt my country’s former supreme leader, ali khamenei. obviously the song wasn't written abt him specifically, but some of its themes can be interpreted as criticism of someone who had an insane amount of power, was treated almost like some untouchable authority figure, and left behind a really controversial legacy. so personally, i can kinda relate some of the ideas in the song to khamenei and the way he was viewed by a lot of people in iran. thats y i love it so much
