@leokatieocdadhd: OCD in childhood doesn't always look obvious. Sometimes it can show up as fears, checking, avoidance, or feeling responsible for preventing something terrible. And because some of those behaviors can look like imagination or "being extra careful," it may take a long time to realize there was more going on. Here's the key: intrusive thoughts can feel incredibly real without actually saying anything about who you are. #ocd #ocdawareness #intrusivethoughts #ocdrecovery #compulsions
I do all this now as an adult. Particularly repeatedly checking my children and husband are breathing all night

as a child I never really felt like a…child. I was in a constant state of anxiety worrying about the worst possible things and now as a teacher I observe the children I teach and realise how messed up I was. I was petrified of being abducted to the point that I would hide underneath the seats in the car if my parents left me inside for even a minute. I was convinced that somebody would break in and attack my family, and somehow it felt like I was the one responsible for keeping them safe. I would imagine horrific scenarios where a strange man would try to abduct one of my siblings, and I would beg them to take me instead and leave my siblings alone. throughout the school day I’d randomly convince myself that my mother had been in a car crash or something horrible, and the relief I felt seeing her there to pick me up was insane. I was so terrified of the world, but simultaneously so determined to be the protector- even to my father who has always been tall and strong. a 5 year old should never be plagued with those types of thoughts😭
