Can someone please explain to me if I order 2 dinners and dessert and the bill is 300.00 and the next table over orders 2 dinners and dessert and the bill is 100.00 why are we tipping different when the same work from waiter or waitress was performed?

As a cook, it enrages me how servers expect such big tips when all they do is drop your food off while I’m in the back sweating hot standing getting yelled at having to cook Yoshi in a good amount of time while they sit around and wait and text someone on their phone

I hate having to defend tipping. If you can’t afford to tip accordingly then you should be eating out. No problem spending $90 on a 14oz steak or $70 on a bottle of wine then it should be no problem dropping $50 for a tip. If you’re going to throw money away then go all in. Worst part is I’ve yet to go to a restaurant and get a better steak than I can grill at home. They’re never worth the money.

I think the point is that tip culture has become an expectation from servers rather than a thank you for your service. That’s all it should be, a thank you. Not compensation. The expectation is misdirected from the restaurant to the consumer. And because it feels like an obligation to the consumer, people don’t want to tip. Servers should do their job regardless.
