@besel.media3: Thousands of Migrants Remain Stranded in Ceuta After Historic Border Surge Nearly 10,000 migrants are still in Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta, weeks after an unprecedented movement from Morocco overwhelmed the tiny territory. Spanish authorities estimate that more than 72,000 people crossed into Ceuta during the mass influx at the end of July, although the vast majority later returned to Morocco. The situation has left Ceuta, a territory of only about 18.5 square kilometres, struggling to provide accommodation, food and other basic services. Local authorities and humanitarian organisations have warned that existing facilities cannot accommodate everyone still in the enclave. Thousands of migrants have spent weeks sleeping on beaches, streets and makeshift camps while authorities work to expand temporary accommodation. Spain recently established a temporary facility at the port capable of housing about 1,700 adult men, while children and teenagers are being accommodated separately. On September 18, Spanish police and military personnel began clearing migrants from several beaches and moving some of them toward temporary shelters. Reuters reported that tensions emerged as people competed for the limited spaces available, with police firing rubber bullets into the air and using batons during parts of the operation. Humanitarian organisations have raised concerns about people who remain without adequate shelter. Human Rights Watch said in August that the number of people still in Ceuta was uncertain, with Spanish officials estimating about 5,000 at the time while local organisations suggested the figure could be as high as 10,000. The continuing crisis has also generated protests among Ceuta residents, while aid groups have called for additional resources and humane treatment for migrants. The situation remains closely tied to Spain’s efforts to manage the arrivals, determine who can remain and arrange returns or other legal procedures.
