Snails are gastropod mollusks, a highly diverse group of invertebrates renowned for their muscular foot and, in most species, a coiled shell. Freshwater snails, found in lakes, rivers, and ponds worldwide, display characteristics that bridge the gap between their terrestrial and marine counterparts, with some possessing lungs and others gills, depending on their specific aquatic habitat and oxygen availability. Reproduction in snails can be quite varied. Many species are hermaphroditic, possessing both male and female reproductive organs, though cross-fertilization is common. Others are dioecious, with separate sexes. They lay eggs, often in gelatinous masses, which can hatch into miniature versions of the adults or, in some marine species, into free-swimming larval stages. The economic and ecological impact of snails is significant. While some are considered agricultural pests, others play crucial roles in ecosystems as decomposers, grazers, or as a food source for other animals. Certain species are also consumed by humans as a delicacy, such as escargot. Furthermore, some snails are intermediate hosts for parasites that can affect humans and livestock, highlighting their importance in public health studies.
