Kosanji Temple, or its full religious name Shiohanshan Kosoji, is a Buddhist temple of the Jodo Shinshu sect located on Ikujima Island in Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture.
**This temple has a unique history in terms of both its purpose and architecture.**
[ 1 ]. Origin and history of construction : this temple was not started by an old priest, but was built by Kanemoto Kosho, a wealthy former businessman from Osaka.
(1). Building to repay his mother: After his mother passed away, he decided to abandon worldly life, to become a monk (referred to as Kosho Kosanji), and began building this temple in 1936 as a tribute and to his mother, earning it the nickname "Temple of Mothers".
(2). It took over 30 years to build : the construction was carried out with great care and took over three decades to complete.
[2]. Architectural features: "The Museum of Ancient Sites". The most notable feature of Kochanji Temple is the recreation of the most famous religious architecture from all over Japan in one place. The important architectures include:
(1). Koyomon gate : modeled after the exquisite Yomemon gate of Nikko Toshogu shrine.
(2). The observation hall : modeled after the Swan tower at Byodoin temple in Kyoto.
(3). The five-step pagoda is modeled after Muroji Temple in Nara Prefecture. The area under the base of the pagoda houses the relics of the temple's mother. Many buildings and gates within the temple are registered as important cultural properties of Japan.
[ 3 ]. Highlights within the temple : in addition to the original architecture, Kosanji temple also incorporates unique and interesting tourist areas :
(1). If you simulate hell: a long underground cave path that simulates the terrifying images of hell according to Buddhist beliefs, to warn people to refrain from sinning before walking through the light above, where a large statue of Guan Yin is located.
(2). Hill of Hope: A modern art garden on the top of the temple, made from over 3,000 tons of pure white marble, directly from Carrara, Italy, designed by Kazuto Kuetani, a famous sculptor, giving a feeling like a Greek temple, contrasting beautifully with the sky and sea views of the Chetouji Islands.🙏🙏🙏
