I wanted him to be as sharp as possibleand by the time we got to the race, I’d say he was darn near perfect. He was training exceptionally well, and I felt confident. Every move I made with him in training didn’t seem to take much out of him, which showed just how ready and strong he was. I approached the Belmont much like I had with Riva Ridge. With him, I put him in the lead early and let him gallop comfortably for the rest of the race. I’d already decided that with Secretariat, I’d take the same approach.
