What does the end of shared monoculture mean for our conception of “generations”?

I feel like the opposite is happening. We live in a monoculture because of social media especially Tiktok. This summer I went to a rural village to visit my grandmother's family and the kids there were acting exactly like gen z Tiktok teenagers. Also now there is no real subculture, whatever niche you are into becomes a trend eventually and the masses know about it.

this is an interesting take because to me we are living in a monoculture, where everyone has no diversity in their hobbies or things they like. you basically can strike any conversation with someone about a topic one declares „niche“ to then realising everyone is on top of that topic, because nothing is niche anymore or is a subgrouped interest. we all are exposed to the same 5-10 bigger things. and to me that is due to our dependency on social media & we build some sort of digital perception of what communities or special interests are.

It surprises me how much shared culture there still is via social media.

Society is going through a two-way phenomena, it is both fragmenting and uniting at the same time. Everyone is living in their own bubbles, so even if there is a dominant culture (there is) people is able to never interact with it because of how the algorithm works. However, all those bubbles work through the same systems, algorithms, so you could argue that actually everyone is the same because everyone lives under the same cosmology. The "death of monoculture" is just the tip of the iceberg, communities became so fragmented that they ended up uniting, "If everyone is special, no one is".

🤔... Sooo, people over 40 that still remember that Monoculture, they still 'Remember and are Programmed' to their chosen Brands... Has their value increased as opposed to brands usually chasing youth due to their fragmentation? ... 🙄

Doesn’t work though, cause two members of the same community have wildly different communities. BUT this is an EXCELLENT entrance point. Well done 👏

Miss fhe joyous feeling of shared pop culture I had as a kid via editorialised mediums accessed by almost everyone at my age. Only having 4 channels of TV, tapes, and CDs. Gone, and likely to never return.

Finally, someone puts into words what I'm feeling. I would get sat with people I know jack shit of at weddings because "you both play videogames", and by videogames, they mean they play FIFA sometimes and I play fighting games, repeat for everything else, so we have less to talk about. I feel like my parents once found connections in watching the Friends equivalent of my country and applied the same when there is not a show like that nowadays
