@prophakwa: 48-year-old man is dead and a 35-year-old woman has been arrested following a shooting Saturday near Murphysboro, Illinois. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded around 5 p.m. on September 19 to reports of a shooting in progress. Kofi Akamani was taken to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, where he was pronounced dead. Following an initial investigation, Betty Akamani was arrested in connection with the incident. She has since been charged with first-degree murder and other offenses. What makes this story even more difficult to understand is that Betty has an academic background in psychology. It raises a difficult question: How can someone who has studied psychology, human behavior and conflict still find themselves at the center of such a tragic situation? Education can give us knowledge but how we respond to intense emotions and difficult situations can be a completely different matter. The exact circumstances that led to the shooting remain under investigation, and more information is expected as the case develops.
