CHENGETAI Oliver Mtukudzi (Tuku) "Chengetai" is a Shona word that means "to keep, to take care of to preserve, to cherish." It comes from his legendary 2001 album Neria (Original Soundtrack) the soundtrack for Zimbabwe's most famous film the song is only 3 minutes 54 seconds but it carries a lifetime of wisdom The main chorus is simple but heavy Chengetai mai na baba Chengetai mai na baba vayaka Vakatsanya pagwirikwiti ukararama Translated: "Take care of your mother and father. Take care of the mother and father who raised you. They fasted in the wilderness so that you could live." The Story Behind The Song Tuku was known as the man with the talking guitar, and most of his songs were about a worried parent looking after children. Songs like "Dzoka Uyamwe" where a mother calls her child back to suckle after the world has judged them But in "Chengetai" there is a powerful role reversal now it is the children who must become the parents. Tuku is telling the younger generation You are now grown. You have a job you have strength, you have life in the city do not forget the village do not forget the hands that raised you.
