![Who is the greatest Test cricketer of all time? Most answers will start with Bradman, Sobers or Tendulkar. Mine doesn’t. For me, there’s a very strong case for Imran Khan, and when you look at what he did across the same 10 year period in both batting and bowling, the numbers become ridiculous. Take 11 December 1981 to 16 December 1991. Filter every bowler who took at least 100 Test wickets during that period. Hadlee. Marshall. Garner. Holding. Ambrose. Basically the most feared pace bowlers of that era. Imran Khan had the best bowling average among all of them. 223 wickets at 19.00. Hadlee averaged 19.46. Marshall 19.85. And Imran did that while also being a genuine top class batter. Now apply the same 10 year window to batting and filter everyone who scored at least 2,500 Test runs. Miandad. Border. Gooch. Azharuddin. Crowe. Richardson. Vengsarkar. Gavaskar. Dean Jones. Again, Imran Khan comes out on top with an average of 54.55. Five hundreds. Sixteen fifties. So you have one player, over the same decade, finishing with the best bowling average AND the best batting average among the established players of his era. Ridiculous isn’t it? And this wasn’t some part time all rounder bowling a few overs and batting at No. 7. He was carrying a huge bowling workload while producing those batting numbers. Put it into modern terms. Imagine having Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling average [19.6] and Steve Smith’s batting numbers [54.55] at the same time, for a decade. That is basically the level of what Imran Khan was doing between 1981 and 1991. And then add captaincy. He led Pakistan against the greatest pace attack of the era, at a time when most batting lineups around the world were struggling to survive against the West Indies. Best bowling average. Best batting average. Genuine all rounder. And captain of a Pakistan side that could actually stand up to the dominant team of the era. The greatest Test cricketer of all time? You can argue Bradman. You can argue Sobers. You can argue Tendulkar. But if we’re talking about the most complete 10 year period ever produced by a Test cricketer, Imran Khan has one hell of a case.
