It’s incredibly hard to whittle these lives down into just a few minutes, and Neil Hughes may be the hardest of all. His story has taken more unexpected turns than almost anyone else in the 7 Up series. At seven, Neil was a bright, funny boy from Liverpool who dreamed of becoming an astronaut. But by his teens he seemed increasingly anxious and unsettled. He briefly attended Aberdeen University, dropped out after one term, and by 21 Up was living in a squat in London and picking up work on building sites. By 28 Up, he was homeless in Scotland and struggling with depression. His relationship with his parents was complicated as well. Both eventually died, but Neil said there had been a reconciliation before his mother’s death. He spoke particularly movingly about actually becoming closer to her after she developed dementia, saying that for much of his life he felt she had tried to mold him into someone he wasn’t, but that near the end she seemed finally to accept him as he was. Neil’s life gradually began to rebuild. By 35 Up, he was living in the Shetland Islands, writing and appearing in local theatre. Later, fellow Up participant Bruce Balden became an important source of support, even giving Neil somewhere to live. Neil went on to earn a degree through the Open University, became involved in Liberal Democrat politics and served as a local councillor. Religion also became increasingly important to him, and he served as a lay preacher. By 70 Up, Neil is still legally married but separated and living alone in France, in a large house he inherited from his parents. His life there is strikingly solitary. He volunteers half a day each week in a local bookshop, which he says gives his week some structure, and admits that he sometimes feels lonely. Yet he also says he is “as happy as I probably could be given my life.” #7up #70up #sevenup #itv @itv
