Ariete C2🇮🇹 | Edit | Ariete C2 (also known as Ariete AMV — Ammodernamento di Mezza Vita, or "Mid-Life Upgrade") is a comprehensive modernization program for Italy's main battle tank, the C1 Ariete. Italy initiated this program to bring the aging Ariete up to modern NATO standards in terms of mobility, electronics, and protection, extending its operational lifespan into the 2030s (until a full transition to next-generation MBTs takes place). The first production units of the C2 configuration began official delivery to the armed forces in mid-2025. Key Improvements: C1 vs. C2 1. Mobility & Running Gear The main drawback of the baseline C1 Ariete was its underpowered engine (1,300 hp) and overburdened transmission when carrying add-on armor packages. The C2 upgrade addresses this directly: Engine: The upgraded Iveco Vector V12 AMV diesel engine featuring electronic fuel injection (NEM) delivers 1,500 hp (up from 1,300 hp). Transmission & Brakes: Includes a reinforced ZF LSG-3000 automatic transmission and an upgraded braking system. Running Gear: Features 20% wider tracks, reinforced road wheels, and improved suspension, delivering better off-road capability and reduced ground pressure. 2. Fire Control System, Optics & Electronics The turret's electronic infrastructure has been fully digitized: Drives: Hydraulic turret and gun drives were completely replaced with safer, all-electric drives. Sights: Equipped with a brand-new Fire Control System (FCS) from Leonardo. The commander receives the Attila-D panoramic sight, while the gunner gets the Lothar-SD sight (both featuring 3rd-generation thermal imagers and laser rangefinders). The optical suite is unified with the Centauro II tank destroyer. Communications & C4I: Adds a modern battlefield management system (BMS), Software Defined Radios (SDR), a digital intercom, and satellite navigation. 3. Armament & Protection Main Gun: Retains the 120mm/L44 smoothbore gun made by Leonardo. It can fire all modern NATO 120mm munitions (including high-penetration APFSDS and programmable HE rounds). A 12.7mm Remote Weapon Station (RCWS) can also be mounted on top of the turret. Protection: Base weight for the C2 sits around 55 metric tons. The chassis and turret are prepared for quick installation of add-on armor modules — the WAR kit (enhanced frontal chemical/kinetic protection) and the PSO kit (side armor/mine protection), bringing maximum combat weight up to 62.5 tons.Summary: The C2 is a thorough mid-life update.
