math and programming is something current ais are good at, there is a binary answer (correct or wrong output), and because of that fact it’s muuuuch easier to verify their outputs and make training more efficient. Compare it to generating a picture of a butterfly, to train it millions of times you’d need an even better ai, or humans, to verify that the butterfly looks correct and is anatomically sound, but with a math question you could basically just copy the solution into a calculator, or for programming a compiler, and see if the answer works out and is correct. One of the reasons llms can be astonishingly good in certain areas and equally astonishingly stupid in others.
