Replying to @lydiawear786 I really appreciated this comment because I think both things can be true at the same time. The person who is sick may desperately need somewhere to talk about their fear, their mortality, and the possibility that they won’t be here someday. And the people who love them may be terrified, not know what to say, or need to believe they’re going to be okay because the alternative is unbearable to think about. I understand that so much more than I probably make clear when I talk about this. But there’s another side of it that I haven’t really talked about. After living with stage IV cancer for years, hearing “you’re fine,” “you’ve been doing so well,” or versions of “look how long you’ve already lived” has sometimes made me feel almost embarrassed for still being afraid of dying. Like I’m being dramatic. Like I’m somehow a fraud for talking about terminal cancer when I’m still here and still living my life. And I know people usually mean those words as hope. They’re trying to reassure me, and probably themselves. But living longer than someone originally expected doesn’t make the uncertainty disappear. It doesn’t mean I suddenly know how much time I have. And sometimes I don’t need someone to convince me that I’ll be okay. I just need to be allowed to say, “I’m scared this won’t always be okay,” without making the person listening feel responsible for fixing it. I think maybe that’s the hard part for everyone. The sick person is trying to live with the possibility of loss, while the people who love them are sometimes trying desperately not to. 🤍 #Stage4Cancer #MetastaticBreastCancer #LivingWithCancer #AnticipatoryGrief #CancerTok
