@danielsin753: My MIL had been holding my newborn for less than a minute when she called her by the wrong name—when my husband entered the room, he took the baby from her and said, "You need to leave." My mother-in-law, Margaret, was the first person in my husband's family to hold our newborn daughter. Less than a minute later, she looked down at her tiny face and whispered: “Hello, little Grace.” I frowned. “Grace?” Margaret smiled as if she'd said nothing unusual. “It suits her, don't you think?” My stomach tightened. “We haven't chosen a name yet.” “Oh, I know,” she replied softly. “It's only a suggestion.” But something about the way she said it didn't sound like a suggestion. And at that moment, I was too exhausted to understand why. I had just given birth after hours of labor, and the person I desperately wanted beside me still wasn't there. My husband, Daniel. He knew I was in labor. He had promised he was coming. Hours earlier, he'd called and said he was on his way. But every time the hospital door opened, it was a nurse. Every time my phone buzzed, there was still no explanation. So when the door finally swung open again, relief rushed through me. Finally. Daniel. But the second he saw his mother holding our newborn baby, he stopped dead. His face changed completely. No smile. No tears. No joy. Just anger. “Mom,” he said. Margaret looked up. “Daniel, you finally made it.” He didn't answer. Instead, he walked toward her. “Give me the baby.” Margaret blinked. “You just got here.” “Give her to me.” Her arms tightened slightly around my daughter. “She is my granddaughter.” Daniel's voice turned cold. “And she's my daughter. Give her to me. Now.” The entire hospital room went silent. Margaret finally handed him our baby. I stared at my husband, stunned. “What the hell is going on?” He didn't answer me. He looked straight at his mother. “I spoke to the nurse outside.” Margaret immediately went pale. “Oh, for God's sake.” Daniel's jaw tightened. “She told me everything.” That was when I realized something had been happening behind my back. Something involving my newborn daughter. “Can someone please tell me what you're talking about?” I demanded. Daniel turned toward his mother, tightened his hold on our newborn, and said five words that made the entire room freeze: “Mom, you need to leave.” Before either of them could say more, someone knocked. The nurse stepped inside holding several papers. The instant she saw Margaret, she hesitated. “Oh. I didn’t realize everyone was still here.” Daniel looked directly at her. “Actually, your timing is perfect.” I stared between them. “What am I missing?” The nurse shifted uncomfortably. “I thought this was something you and your husband had already discussed.” See less
