As bad as Hiroshima and Nagasaki were, if the US didn't drop the bombs when they did, Japan would be speaking Russian today. After WWII the Soviet Union was growing, and moving east. They were working their way to the Pacific. The US had to stop the war in the Pacific immediately. It worked, the war ended, and the Soviet Union stopped moving eastward.
