Sympathy for the Devil Facing high genetic cancer risks, Angelina Jolie made the agonizing decision to undergo a preventative double mastectomy in 2013, followed by the surgical removal of her ovaries and fallopian tubes. These interventions drastically reduced her cancer risk, but they altered her body forever, inducing instant surgical menopause, physical numbness, and deep hormonal changes that reshaped her identity and intimacy. Throughout these procedures, Brad Pitt stood beside her as a steadfast source of support. Confronting such grave medical realities initially brought the couple closer, forcing them to navigate the physical toll and psychological weight with patience and vulnerability. However, managing abrupt health changes under global public scrutiny gradually took a heavy toll. By 2016, external strains intensified. Overwhelmed by deep-seated anxiety and a fear of losing him, Jolie's trust faltered, leading her to fire a nanny after a misconstrued interaction with Pitt and hire a private detective while he was filming Allied. Intense tabloid rumours simultaneously alleged an affair between Pitt and co-star Marion Cotillard (claims Cotillard fiercely denied). Deeply distressed by the media circus and escalating home tension, Pitt increasingly relied on alcohol as a coping mechanism, pulling them further apart. As strain mounted leading up to the distressing September 2016 private plane incident, Jolie's fear of separation only heightened the tension between them. Following that flight, which marked the culmination of their compounding struggles, Jolie filed for divorce. Just two months later, as Pitt promoted Allied globally from Los Angeles to London, their heartbreak played out under full media exposure. What began as a brave, shared journey through profound medical trauma ultimately succumbed to a combination of physical, psychological, and public pressures that few couples could ever be expected to endure.
