Unless you witness it from the top of the tank shell, it may be difficult to believe that the enormous steel space-frame dome below will soon be lifted all the way up to this position. This is the dome roof lifting operation for a large fixed roof petroleum storage tank. The tank shell is erected bottom-up, one shell course at a time, while the steel space-frame dome is fully assembled inside the tank beforehand. Once lifting begins, equipment positioned around the structure operates synchronously, slowly raising the complete dome toward the top of the shell. During the lift, the crew must control not only the lifting speed but also the elevation difference between lifting points, overall dome deformation and the roof’s position relative to the tank shell. After reaching the designed elevation, the dome must still be aligned, positioned and permanently connected. You may have seen gasoline storage tanks, diesel storage tanks and large tank farms, but you may never have seen how the dome of a fixed roof tank is installed. As a storage tank contractor, I enjoy standing in places that only construction personnel can reach and recording details that most people rarely have the opportunity to see. When the entire steel dome slowly rises from the bottom of the tank, you understand that the most impressive part of a large storage tank is sometimes not its completed appearance, but the process of building it. #GasolineStorageTank #DieselStorageTank #DomeRoofTank #FuelStorageTank #architecture
