There are a few forms within my range that I return to again and again: mugs, storage jars, plates and bowls. Of these, the bowls have seen the greatest shift over time, largely through a move away from fully curved profiles towards more angular forms, bringing them into closer alignment with the rest of the work I make. Do you have a favourite of the three? In my YouTube video this weekend, I’m taking you through that progression and why I am now preparing to retire my previous angular bowl in favour of something new. I cover the full making and trimming process, sharing the small decisions and practical considerations that go into refining a vessel like this, a link to which you can find in my profile’s biography. In the longer video I’ve also included some footage that’s left unedited, showing the true pace of the work, from trimming and tool maintenance to the interruptions, adjustments and mistakes that inevitably occur along the way. This seemed to be popular in a short video I posted here recently so I hope you find the real pace of making interesting if you do happen to click over. I’m really looking forward to glazing this batch of bowls. While the changes are subtle rather than dramatic, they reference the shallower forms I used to make, and I am particularly drawn to the indented rim. It creates a more complex surface, one that invites the glaze to pool, move and settle in a way that feels rich and considered. Thanks for watching! #pottery #wheelthrownpottery #handmade #craft #ceramics
