Moderate stress is good for your brain. As a neurosurgeon, this concept is what guides optimal performance on every tasks and surgery I do. The optimal work environment may not be low-stress. Moderate pressure/stress has been linked to improved performance on tests of executive (higher level) brain functioning. Tasks which are challenging, with a moderate but controllable and achievable goal, are likely to yield the best performance. The key to success is to lean into things that are hard, not run away. You are capable of far more than you think. This concept is not new- in the early 1900s Yerkes and Dodson discovered that both low and high stress levels were correlated with lower productivity. The sweet spot seemed to be with moderate stress levels, optimizing for both productivity and performance. This likely has to do with the stimulating effects of the stress hormone, cortisol, on the central nervous system. This leads to increased alertness, motivation, concentration, memory, and other markers of executive functioning. High stress levels on the other hand have been associated strongly with adverse health outcomes and poor performance. A few interesting studies on the topic: You need access to view this but you can see the original 1908 article and bell curve: https://link.springer.com/rwe/10.1007/978-0-387-79948-3_1340 Nice summary in @nature_the_journal https://www.nature.com/nature-index/topics/l4/stress-effects-on-memory-performance-and-cognition https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3369195/ #neurosurgeon #neurosurgerylife #cognitiveperformance #brainhealth #BlessedNotStressed
