Bryan Kohberger is trying to move his post-conviction proceedings to a new courtroom — and remove the judge who sentenced him to four consecutive life terms. According to PEOPLE, Kohberger’s new legal team has filed a motion seeking to disqualify Judge Steven Hippler and change the venue as Kohberger attempts to withdraw his guilty pleas and receive a trial. Kohberger, 31, pleaded guilty to murdering University of Idaho students Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin. He is now claiming ineffective assistance of counsel and alleges his pleas were influenced by “unkept promises” and threats from his former legal counsel. PEOPLE reports the defense points to comments Hippler made about Kohberger, including calling him a “faceless coward” and “the worst of the worst,” and questioning whether he was “capable of speaking the truth.” His attorneys argue those statements could raise questions about the judge’s impartiality as Kohberger’s credibility may become central to the upcoming proceedings. One of Kohberger’s attorneys also told PEOPLE there is additional information surrounding the circumstances of his original plea that is not currently in the public record, adding: “There is considerably more to come.” A status conference is scheduled for June 3, 2027, with an evidentiary hearing set for June 17. If Kohberger ultimately succeeds in withdrawing his guilty pleas and is granted a new trial, prosecutors could once again seek the death penalty. #TrueCrime #IdahoFour #MoscowMurders #MoscowIdaho
