I agree with your take although I don't think he had all tools to become champion or compete at high level. Mma wrestling is so much different than pure wrestling and aside from that his body is simply not built for fighting, he doesn't have ability to move like a fighter he doesn't grasp how to be violent. And you can't just get those abilities easily it's same as wrestling part.

Look, lots of UFC guys turn their heads blindly! If you do that, who cares if your eyes are shut? Truth is, Sean pulled off a really nice boxing move, sliding his right leg around after missing with the right, and landing a lovely almost check hook, give him credit? Sure, Gable is rubbish at boxing defence, but he ain’t alone as a UFC novice, 80% of the whole roster punch like bar fighters!
