Paul the Apostle · Antioch – Lystra – Troas – Neapolis – Philippi – Thessalonica – Berea – Athens – Corinth – Ephesus – Caesarea – Antioch · c. AD 49 – c. AD 52 The journey began with a quarrel. Barnabas wanted to take John Mark again, and Paul refused. There was such a sharp disagreement that they separated from one another (Acts 15:39 LSB). Barnabas took Mark to Cyprus. Paul chose Silas, a leader of the Jerusalem church, and walked through Syria and Cilicia to Derbe and Lystra. At Lystra he took on Timothy, the son of a Jewish mother and a Greek father. They were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia (Acts 16:6 LSB), the Roman province in what is now western Turkey. They tried for Bithynia, and the Spirit did not permit it. So they came down to Troas on the Aegean. There Paul saw a man of Macedonia in a vision, asking for help. At this point Acts starts to say we: Luke, its writer, had joined them. They sailed by Samothrace to Neapolis and walked up to Philippi. At Philippi, Paul and Silas were beaten and jailed. At midnight an earthquake shook the prison open. On the Via Egnatia they went to Thessalonica, where a mob attacked the house of their host. The believers sent them by night to Berea, where the Jews were examining the Scriptures daily (Acts 17:11 LSB). Paul went on alone to Athens. There he told the council of the Areopagus that he had found an altar TO AN UNKNOWN GOD (Acts 17:23 LSB). From Athens he walked to Corinth. He stayed there a year and six months (Acts 18:11 LSB) and worked with Priscilla and Aquila, who were tentmakers. Silas and Timothy rejoined him there. From Corinth he wrote 1 and 2 Thessalonians. He sailed with Priscilla and Aquila, left them at Ephesus, and landed at Caesarea. He greeted the church at Jerusalem and went down to Antioch. Why it matters: Philippi was the first church Acts records in Europe. The letters to the Thessalonians are among the oldest writings in the New Testament. An inscription at Delphi dates Gallio's term in Corinth to about AD 51–52, the firmest date in Paul's life. Scripture is from the Legacy Standard Bible (LSBible.org). #PaulTheApostle #Silas #BookofActs #history #maps
