Chivayo had publicly praised Uriri for his legal work over the years and announced that the lawyer could collect a brand-new 2026 Range Rover Sport Autobiography valued at US$250,000, together with US$50,000 in cash for fuel. Chivayo also said Uriri’s wife, who is also a senior lawyer, would receive a further US$50,000 cash allowance. However, in a detailed response, Uriri said the couple had “respectfully” declined the vehicle and both cash gifts. He explained that he had not undertaken any professional work for Chivayo since they last spoke in June 2024, adding that the historical work referenced in Chivayo’s tribute had already been fully paid for. Uriri said the unexpected nature and substantial value of the gifts, coupled with their connection to his past professional services, required him to approach the gesture with particular care. He cited professional obligations surrounding integrity, independence and public confidence in the legal profession, saying accepting the benefits could create a perception of a financial obligation beyond a concluded professional engagement. “The decision is nevertheless firm: we will not accept the vehicle or either of the cash gifts,” Uriri stated. The lawyer also thanked Chivayo for his generous words and recognition of his past work, while making it clear that his decision was based on maintaining professional independence.
