Yes, I know the Hawaiian economy is dependent on tourism. Dozens of nations and regions have economies dependent on oil; that doesn't mean they should keep drilling. This is also part of America's colonial legacy in Hawai'i: getting it addicted to tourism. I believe we need radical voices to shift the discourse and at least dissuade some people from visiting and remind those that do of the stakes of tourism. Is the Hawaiian economy more important than its water, than the islands' ability to sustain life? In Native Hawaiian culture, water IS the economy. From Ola i ka Wai:

Mitigating the climate crisis requires us, particularly us privileged folks, to make sacrifices, to give things up. Continuing to live as we have been is repugnant, careless, a complete abdication of responsibility. Refusing to change is giving up on caring for the community. Also, that $689,000 figure for the lifetime cost of car ownership is certain to be an underestimate in Hawaii, where cars and gas are exceptionally expensive.
