@melissajbyrnex: Replying to @Josie Leigh communicating with my narcissistic mother was a challenge all within itself. And like I say, no matter where I put myself, it was always the wrong place to sit
I won’t tell you my age but I looked after my mother for over twenty years. There is nothing I wouldn’t do to help her. I was totally drained because she very rarely showed me any warmth or interest in my life. She passed away in July this year. I have my life back and haven’t shed a tear. I understand you entirely [Red heart]

I learned to develop an extremely flat affect - either talking to her or on the phone in front of her. If I sounded happy I would be punished (how very dare I be a happy child when she was miserable with adult responsibilities), but as you say, I couldn’t match her mood or I would get a slap for being miserable (how dare I be so ungrateful when I had a roof/food/clothes). So flat and emotionless with non committal noises was the way to go.

I’ve been following you for a few months and can I say thank you for talking about this kind of thing, I am no contact from my dad it’s been almost a year and it’s been hard but the time comes and you have to choose yourself, most people don’t understand as that my “dad” he’s “family” it don’t matter I was removed from his care when I was a child and he never ever changed in my adult life so thank you so much

I always had the voice and smile I specifically used for my mother. It was always [Perfect score] fake. Having to pretend to be happy around her was exhausting. The only time the "real me" was let out, was when I was with my dad. I was always naturally happy to be around my dad.

Thank you for responding lovely, I can relate so much! For me it was like I had to wear a mask around her that was never my true self as well as I didn’t feel safe to openly be me, it’s not something I did intentionally either I felt like I had a wall up blocking me almost like mutism!
