@sciencefunn: On April 3, 1986, a small group of math teachers really did picket outside the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics annual meeting in Washington, D.C. They were protesting the council’s recommendation that calculators be incorporated into mathematics education at all grade levels. A contemporary Washington Post report says there were about 20 protesters, while roughly 6,000 math teachers were attending the conference. Their concern was specifically about young children using calculators before mastering basic arithmetic, rather than opposition to calculators in every context. The organizers argued that elementary-school students might become dependent on calculators instead of learning computation. The NCTM’s position was that calculators should be used after students knew the relevant math facts, as a tool rather than a replacement for thinking.
