![Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli passed away on this day in 1995. There he is in Paris rehearsing the Valses nobles et sentimentales, III. Modéré, by Maurice Ravel, for an upcoming concert at Salle Pleyel (1968-69). Ravel chose that title to pay homage to Schubert’s 12 Valses Nobles D. 969 and 34 Valses sentimentales D. 779. In this quite sentimental waltz by Ravel, reminiscent of Ma Mère l’Oye, Michelangeli’s immaculate touch and phrasing make the magic happen. On May 9, 1911 a peculiar experience, that should be renewed today, took place at Salle Gaveau thanks to composer Charles Koechlin: he submitted to Ravel the idea of having a concert without any composer name. The pieces would be played by different pianists, without any mention of authorship; the goal was to « remove the influence of preconceived ideas in the mind of the public […] ». Well, Ravel had just finished his 8 Valses so Louis Aubert, the dedicatee, played them alongside other new pieces by other composers and the goal was for the public (mainly critics) to guess who composed what.
