The deeper we understand how the world works, the harder it becomes to see it as something simple or to take it for granted. Today, scientists can map the neurons of a fly, model their connections, and attempt to reproduce the behavior of these systems on computers. From a Jewish perspective, the value of such knowledge is not that humanity can proclaim itself the creator of life, but that by studying Creation we can become wiser and more responsible. As Maimonides taught, contemplating the works and creations of God can lead a person toward an appreciation of His wisdom.
