Never did gravel, always did a layer of fluval then sand to cap. has always worked for me. but I also don't mind mulm and let it accumulate

all well and good until you want African cichlids and gravel helps with aggression. it all depends on the tank and what's in it. Sometimes sand is great, sometimes I don't want it being constantly air dropped onto the leaves of my plants because my fish keep grabbing mouthfuls of it. stratum is great too, until you want to repurpose it years later in another set up. stratum is nutritious but that colored gravel you got when you were six is as good as the day you got it.
