@willz.talks: This conversation isn’t about iced coffee. I’m sure for some people it is, but just as she abstracts to general principles of professionalism we should take a critical eye to those general principles - and the way that things like this hide the bigotry’s built into those principles, and how even that manner of browbeating serves them by obscuring systems of power for morality
I will never understand this, iced coffee is just a drink and shouldn’t be disallowed unless it’s a no drink type of place, not just iced coffee

Its also classist, cant look presentable if you cant afford hair products, good clothes, makeup, etc. cant afford that stuff without a good job, cant get a job if you dont look presentable.

It’s not any deeper than the fact that you don’t bring any kind of food or drink with you too, an interview. Ideally, you’re supposed to be putting your best foot forward, and so why on God Green, earth would you go and bring food or drink? It’s not a big deal, but like why would you ever do it? At least if you care about the job.

literally the only good example of the reason why you shouldn’t bring an iced coffee to interview that I seen in this whole debate is that it would make your hand cold and wet and therefore not nice to shake

Idc if it’s not woke, I’m not going to tank my chances for smth stupid like a coffee. I’ll drink the coffee in the morning and brush my teeth after, then interview. You can probably bring a coffee to the job AFTER you’re hired

Genuine question — would you think it’s professional to bring food into an interview?

the problem is both sides here are arguing different things. the pro-iced coffee side is arguing that the "rule" is arbitrary and unnecessary and is therefor dumb and shouldnt exist. The anti-iced coffee side is missing the point completely and arguing that thems the social etiquette rules thay "society has agreed on" and you cant expect to get a job if you refuse to follow said rules. WE KNOW! we know we cant expect to get the job if we bring the iced coffee, THE POINT IS WE ARE SAYING THAT THAT IS DUMB AND NONSENSICAL AND UNFAIR AND WE SHOULD CHANGE THE SOCIETAL RULES IN ORDER TO IMPROVE SOCIETY!!!!!

it's about sorting out who will submit blindly to a boss and who won't, it's not even subtle and of course it's not about coffee lol

my main confusion is with the people who are actually distinguishing between a hot coffee and an iced coffee. i'm seeing people suggesting that a hot coffee is okay but an iced coffee is not. i saw somebody yesterday say "an iced coffee isn't a coffee it's a sweet treat". i don't know if this is a cultural or regional difference but an iced coffee is just a coffee to me. i don't see the difference.

Bring your iced coffee, your hot coffee or a slice of pizza....It just means the other applicant will get the job.

I think you're confusing things. can etiquette be used as a tool of oppression? yes. has it been used that way? also yes. does that mean all professional etiquette is inherently racist/sexist and it only exists for that purpose? no of course not.

A candidate bringing a fresh iced coffee from a busy shop just tells me that candidate knows how to manage their time well. I know FAR too many people who think it’s appropriate to show up to work late (sometimes up to 15 minutes late!) because they “needed their coffee” first. If you budgeted time to go get a fresh iced coffee at a busy establishment before your interview and still arrived on time, I’m impressed, not pissed

And tbh I’d add this one into age discrimination. Iced coffee is associated with younger people in particular (yes everyone drinks it don’t do that), but we see it because as every economic down turn since the intro of iced coffee there has been an equivalent to explain the inability to achieve economic markers by blaming iced coffee. Millennials were called unprofessional and told they weren’t able to buy homes because of iced coffee. As were Gen X. Which I’d argue insinuates a connotation between the two. WHY ARE YOU GOING ONLINE TO ADMITTING BIASES! Like babes they are laying off everyone all the time..

I’ve always thought that a lot of “professional” culture is a tool to control the working class. It’s like a form of indirect totalitarianism.
