Sunday Drum Set Tone Check 🥁 This week I wanted to share a quick tone check from a drum kit I play almost every week. I love keeping this kit dialed in for what we do. It’s been sounding great, but I think a fresh set of heads is coming soon. 👀 The kit is a DW Collector’s Series paired with my personal 14” × 6.5” Pearl Sensitone Bronze and a 14” × 6.5” DW Collector’s Maple side snare. For this setup, I’m going for a beefy, present main snare, a high and crisp side snare, and toms with plenty of body while staying focused. I’m using a Snareweight M1b on the rack tom, M80s on both floor toms, a 120g Tandem Dot from @tandemdrums on the main snare, and a 40g Tandem Dot on the side snare. The toms are running Evans HD Dry Coated batters on the 12” and 16”, an ST Dry on the 14”, and EC Reso Clear resonants. The kick has an Evans EMAD Heavyweight for the focused attack and low-end punch I’m after. Both snares are running Evans Snare Side 300s with the stock snare wires. The side snare stays tuned high with the 40g Tandem Dot for that crisp, quick auxiliary sound. The main snare sits in a medium-high tuning with the 120g Tandem Dot, giving me that beefy, present sound while keeping it controlled. The toms have some meat behind the note, but the heads and dampening keep them focused without choking them out. And honestly, one of the biggest things I’ve learned over the years isn’t really about the gear. It’s preparation. I try to arrive a little early every Sunday, even when I know the kit doesn’t need much work. A few extra minutes of fine-tuning helps me stop thinking about the drums and focus on the music. Whether it’s rehearsal, church, or a gig, taking the time to get your gear where you want it makes a huge difference. But enough about what I think… 👀 What do you think of this kit’s sound?
