This is how I teach my preschoolers to draw a person with all of the body parts. I use Mat Man from Handwriting Without Tears. Mat Man is built with the same blue mat, lines, and curves we use when learning to build capital letters, so it connects really naturally to early handwriting. We start by reading Mat Man Shapes, then I build Mat Man on the floor while we sing the song. Next, each student gets one piece and we build him together. After that, students use a whiteboard and dry erase marker while I pause the song after each body part so it becomes a simple directed drawing. Finally, we transfer that drawing onto paper. From there, we move into All About Me and talk about what makes each of us unique. We all have the same basic body parts, but students begin adding their own details like eye color, hair color and texture, clothing, shoes, and more. We continue practicing this throughout the year during Star of the Week. Each week we draw our featured friend while singing the Mat Man song and changing the words to describe that student. It gives preschoolers a really strong foundation for understanding body parts and drawing a complete person, while also building the same lines, curves, and visual motor skills they’ll use for handwriting.
