Based on the game's lore, since the No Man's Sky universe is a dying simulation run by the supercomputer Atlas, that’s a reconstructed consciousness of a dead Traveller. you are literally pulling up to a corrupted, floating backup file of a dead version of yourself (or another Traveller) The glowing knot is a digitized memory cluster, it’s essentially a corrupted backup file leaking into space as the Atlas degrades.

it's you. an old you. or someone else's old self. degrading under atlas' aging simulation of the universe. A simulation so real that entire lives are lived out, and beings make historical decisions, but infinity isn't sustainable. So Atlas struggles. Even the trillions of combinations of planets, galaxies, systems, etc, are still finite. Some consciousnesses get corrupted in Atlas' struggle to sustain infinity, and you're looking right at one.
