The Sphinx was carved before the end of the last ice age which began around ten thousand BC. It was buried up to it's neck with sediment from the destructive power of ice age deglaciation flooding along with the yearly flooding of the Nile river.

I really believe the sphinx head wasn't that of a pharaoh or human faced God, it was a lion, the Pharaoh's headdress I think was it's mane, it's face is way too small for its body, and Egyptians usually got proportions right, so it'd not make sense them getting the head of this so much smaller in proportion to its body, it's stood there for thousands of years, there is proof of a flood that happend by it's markings on its side, even with that happening, still the body looks too big for the head, some historians believe that it was a lion and the face was altered to make it look more like the pharaoh of that time
