The thing is many people do not know that the Wesley brothers (John and Charles) remained Anglican priests till death just like their father. The began a revival and evangelical group in the Anglican Church that got them the nickname “Methodists” due to their structure of doing things when they were students at Oxford university. Even though this movement will later be translated into today’s Methodist church, however the Wesley brothers remained Anglican priests till death. None left the Church of England. Everything they did were done as Anglican priests. All the hymns and songs Charles wrote, he wrote them as Anglican priest. In fact Charles was even more a loyal and stricter Anglican than John. The viewed Methodism as a movement in Anglican communion rather than an independent denomination. In fact both brothers opposed the idea of the Methodist movement becoming independent from the Church of England even more Charles was more fierce about a breakaway. In fact Charles remained a very strict and loyal Anglican unlike John who towards the end of his life did everything possible to ensure the survival of the movement. Yes while today’s Methodist church see John Wesley as their founder, we must however note that what he established was a revival movement in the Church of England, not as a separate denomination, even though the movement will later become an independent church. Never did he nor Charles (who was a more fierce Anglican faithful) leave the Church of England at any point all their lives till death. The take away is this; When you hear Charles and John Wesley, know that they were born and bred by an Anglican priest, trained and ordained as Anglican priests and died as Anglican priests even more Charles rejected the idea of having the Methodist movement which they started as an independent church from the Anglican Church. If you think otherwise, quietly read the history books or consult your internet.
