Lowkey starting to give colonisation, except we know that authoritarian regimes had weaknesses we could exploit (i.e death of a dictator). Oppression by AI can’t seem to provide opportunities for reform. Say, the US wins the race to AGI, that would mean most parts of the population would be “useless” in that the value of human economic labour becomes insignificant. That affects EVERYBODY (remote workers globally, entrepreneurs and even government). I mean sure people can invest in AI companies but that income loss would be catastrophic. What would the future look like with AGI?

I would argue that South Africa has legs in both worlds. I use mostly PAX Silica models primarily because I buy into being smarter in research and everything follows and in that case China will always be a step behind.

Interesting piece. Always thought US relied on imported chips. I think China may remain the only dual country in terms of manufacturing/consuming. Makes me wonder the ‘national security’ implications for other countries who rely on open-source.

Thinking of what Elon Musk was trying to achieve with starlink to South Africa. Because you do mention that the US is trying to get smarter with their AI whereby they use it to overpower other people or let’s say countries now based on this information just shared I would assume that going with the Chinese is the better option for us in South Africa as we are also trying to better our manufacturing industry so I would say in a way the intent that China has with the AI more so aligns with what we’re trying to achieve 🤔

This is interesting!!! If the US “wins” this race it will definitely strengthen the dollar as they’re looking at Ai as the successor of oil in the global economy. The US will stop at nothing to create demand for the dollar. This is not just technological advancement , its about which currency runs the global economy

what do you think about the disparity on ai spend between China and the US? Seems to me like China is only 6 months behind the frontier while spending far less

now I know why some of these models will be very expensive in some countries especially those that are not in any of the stacks smh
