This week I’m throwing and trimming a tall, angular vase, or urn, while talking through a question I’m asked very regularly: chattering. In particular, chattering when using tungsten carbide tools. What it is, why it happens, and how I deal with it in practice.   Chattering is the moment when the blade begins to rapidly bounce on the surface as you’re trimming, leaving a repeated linear texture across the surface of the pot. Even after tens of thousands of hours at the wheel, it still happens. For me, that’s an important point to make. It’s not something I believe can be completely designed out of the process as there are simply too many variables at play. Clay composition, moisture content, tool sharpness, pressure, speed. All of these play into it and sometimes it’s a dreadful experience, yet there are other times when the tool passes blissfully over the surface, leaving a glassy smooth finish. Because of this, I think it’s more useful to learn how to deal with chattering than to imagine it can always be avoided.   Tungsten carbide trimming tools are what I use for roughly ninety percent of the shaping. They’re efficient and allow me to move a lot of material in a controlled way. Then, that last ten percent is done with steel tools and very sharp metal scrapers. This is where the form is refined, edges are clarified and any remaining chatter marks are removed.   That said, if chattering is something you’re intentionally seeking, then that’s a perfectly valid decision. My only real opinion is that it should be deliberate. If it’s there, let it be obvious and purposeful. If it isn’t, then it’s something worth eliminating entirely.
