Ed gave Macklemore a place on his tour and allowed him to perform and express his views. After two shows, the remaining dates were put at risk because venues reportedly refused to host the shows with him. Ed has said that cancelling the tour would have meant letting down the fans who bought tickets and the countless people — musicians, crew and staff — whose jobs depend on those shows. What I struggle with is the fact that this was Ed’s tour, his fans, his crew and hundreds of people’s livelihoods at stake. Macklemore was an opening act who had been given a platform on someone else’s tour. He could make his statement, but the consequences of the resulting conflict were not going to fall only on him. And if the real issue is that powerful people or venues can put an artist’s entire tour at risk because they dislike what an opening act says, why direct all the anger at Ed? Why not question the people and institutions with the power to make that threat in the first place? You can support Palestine and still question whether this was the right way to handle the situation. You can believe Macklemore had every right to speak while also believing that Ed had a responsibility to protect the people who were depending on his tour. Supporting Palestine and supporting Ed are not mutually exclusive. He was on a lose lose situation due to Macklemore and I feel bad for all the he's getting No hate. No harassment. No drama.
