@omnisyntra: I’m increasingly convinced that “burnout” is too small a word for what many autistic people describe: not simply exhaustion, but the loss of adaptations and compensatory capacity that made an incompatible ecology survivable. Maybe instead of forcing our experiences into the existing language, we should get curious about what that language is failing to capture. #AutisticBurnout #ActuallyAutistic #AutisticAdults #Neurodivergence #CognitiveEcology
I am convinced the term “nervous breakdown” that I always heard old ladies talk about was actually undiagnosed autistic women who reached autistic burnout.

Yes, I’ve never recovered. It’s way more than burn out. It’s life altering.
I'm fighting to keep myself from going completely quiet. I'm finding it difficult to talk. Literally talk.

I've referred to it as "nervous system collapse"... to myself. Because I don't actually talk about this with anyone because I don't have real conversations anymore. I'm only verbal to be polite and keep my public mask propped up.

I’d say stop making it a negative. Maybe, just maybe we need to recognise it from our perspective, not what makes those who haven’t feel better about the fact they haven’t. For me as hard, frightening, and frustrating as it is I feel like I am in a better emotional, intellectual, spiritual and honest state than almost everyone I know. It’s been far more of an awakening than a collapse. The collapse element only comes in to it when still looking at it from the perspective of the societal norms of those desperately trying to be what they are not, and forcing people like us into the same state of being. What if we are on the right path now and others need to recognise that, not force us back into their way of being? Just a thought

Burnout implies recovery is possible once demands and systems have a chance to recover. My functionality and ability to navigate the world completely (and permanently) changed. 15 years later, after careful and hard work to rebuild I am still struggling with things that were part of my functioning. I can read again now, but it comes at a very high cost, and I need to be fully motivated to even make an attempt. I have a PhD, the loss of this skill was everything.

My nervous system shut down. I started burning out at 12. Then at 28 my nervous system was like nope, no more. We dont trust you any more, you dont listen. You only listen when you are having a migraine, so her you go, chronic migraine.

It’s not burnout. I can no longer access those modes anymore. I cannot move like I once did. I have been here for two years. And starting to change.

I wasn't aware that burnout was used to mean just tired. In Scandinavia it's a medical term, and it's common knowledge that it takes years to recover, if you ever do.

Systemic collapse... That's what I feel it's happening to me. You can see the elements of the sistem failing, and others compensating for a bit before also collapsing, until nothing works anymore... and the system fully shuts down forever.
