Learning to tolerate and embrace discomfort is one of the most liberating things one can do

I believe this is how alcoholism starts. People can’t handle the discomfort and would rather numb themselves. After a while, the body becomes dependent on it and that’s where the addiction kicks in.

It took hitting rock bottom and a complete nervous breakdown for me to realize I need to sit with the discomfort and face everything I had been suppressing. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but so incredibly rewarding. Instead of running back to old destructive tendencies, I did it in the healthiest way possible. It was the best decision to face my own darkness and work through it. It made me have more empathy for the people around me, because actually facing what we are running from feels like hell

Outside of emotional relationships (friends, family, lovers, etc), I’ve learned there’s an art to strategic “people pleasing”. Sometimes you don’t fight difficult people. You learn their system, give them just enough of what they need, and quietly make the situation work in your favor. Not tolerating disrespect. Not making yourself smaller. Just realizing that managing someone is sometimes easier than changing them. They may be difficult with everyone else. Somehow, they’re never difficult with me ☺️

I made emotional discomfort my friend. Amazing how people around me became uncomfortable with me sitting in my own discomfort. One year my motto was get comfortable in the discomfort. It’s one of the most important things we can do for ourselves. Changes your life.

Learning to coexist peacefully with my emotions instead of becoming them has been the most rewarding and gut wrenching experience of my life. I’ve discovered along the way that I never struggled with being brave in my willingness to confront myself I struggled to notice when my bravery turned into recklessness. Self-compassion, curiosity, bravery and knowing when it’s ok to exist in your new state of knowing without feeling as if you have to dismantle everything at once 💞

My husband died with cancer earlier this year and we met the disease head on. We saw what was coming and found that no one could meet us in reality. It was so lonely but I’ve certainly learned a lot about how people cope with highly emotional situations. I joke that you have the people who lean in and the ones who lean out, and they don’t seem to like each other in those moments.

I used to be a people pleaser but it took me 30 something years to understand that you can be as kind and as accommodating as possible and it will never be enough. I’m not a fighter either. Now I just focus my energy into things that are worth my time. I let as much go as possible. I journal and exercise to get my frustration out. Sometimes I vent to my Mom but its only after I have solved or got over the issue that was bothering me. Some people really do suck and they are not going anywhere because their still is something about them that works for the situation that you are in. Accept the good and the bad.

YES OMG YES. We AFFECT each other. Did you know, in a room of pianos, if you play a C on one of the pianos, ALL OF THE C STRINGS IN THE ROOM VIBRATE. We *affect* each other. What note do you want to play? And activate in others? Thank you for this and your work in the world.

Just realized that swearing gives me discomfort. You're right though, when people are being a-holes they don't deserve tolerance.
